Impurity transport due to electromagnetic drift wave turbulence

چکیده
Finite β effects on impurity transport are studied through local linear gyrokinetic simulations with gyro [J. Candy and E. Belli, General Atomics Report GA-A26818 (2011)]; in particular we investigate the parametric dependences of the impurity peaking factor (zero-flux density gradient) and the onset of the kinetic ballooning modes (KBM). We find that electromagnetic effects even at low β can have significant impact on the impurity transport. The KBM instability threshold depends on the plasma parameters, particularly strongly on plasma shape. We have shown that magnetic geometry significantly influences the results, and the commonly used s-α model overestimates the KBM growth rates and ITG stabilization at high β. In the β range where the KBM is the dominant instability the impurity peaking factor is strongly reduced, with very little dependence on β and the impurity charge.

متن کاملSecondary instabilities of large scale flow and magnetic field in the electromagnetic short wavelength drift-Alfvén wave turbulence
It is shown that the short wavelength ~k' 2 r i .1, k' is the characteristic wave vector, and r i is the ion Larmor radius! electromagnetic drift wave turbulence in typical conditions is unstable with respect to the excitation of large scale perturbations of the plasma flow and magnetic field. It is found that the generation of zonal flow is reduced ~compared to the long wavelength ion temperat...
متن کاملThe influence of magnetic fluctuations on collisional drift-wave turbulence
A two-dimensional isothermal collisional drift-wave turbulence model including magnetic fluctuations is studied numerically. The model has as limits the electrostatic collisional drift-wave and two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic systems. The electromagnetic and electrostatic regimes for thermal gradient-driven ~drift-wave! turbulence are decided by the parameter b̂5(4pnT/B)(Ls /Ln ), where Ls a...

where θ is the density of impurities, μθ the collisional diffusivity, and ζ = mθ qθ e mi ρs Ln the influence of inertia, which enters via the polarization drift. The latter makes the flow compressible, consequently for ideal (massless) impurities, ζ = 0 and advection is due to the incompressible electric drift only. In all cases the impurity density is assumed to be so low compared to the bulk ...
متن کاملZonal Flows and Electromagnetic Drift Wave Turbulence
Detailed computations of tokamak edge turbulence in three dimensional, globally consistent flux tube geometry show an inhibition of the standard scenario in which zonal ExB flows generated by the turbulence should lead to transport barrier formation. It is found by comparison to slab geometry and by analysis of the energetics that the zonal flow energy is depleted by toroidal coupling to the pr...
